The mass lecture for Usrah in Action that I attend is on 13th October 2023 from 9.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. These sessions are conducted in purpose to ensure that all students and instructors are on the same page regarding the concept, ideas, and expectations of this course. At the beginning of the session, the speaker highlights the goals of this course. Among them is the manifestation of community engagement for the students, developing the proposal, and representing sustainable development goals. A detailed explanation of the assignments and assessment of the course are also included in this mass lecture.
The speaker starts by sharing the general flow of the Usrah in Action course, followed by explaining the assessment of Usrah in Action 1 and Usrah in Action 2 in detail and answering all students' doubts at the end of the session. Basically, there are 4 assessments for Usrah in Action 1, including a reflective journal, documentation of community events, presentation, and portfolio. All of these assignments are group work except for the reflective journal, which needs to be done individually. The assessment for Usrah in Action 2 is the finalization and execution of the projects that have been planned during Usrah in Action 1.
What I can reflect from the session is that it benefits students because the mass lecture gives a clear image to students about what this course is, the goals, as well as the flow of the assessment from the beginning until the end. It also changed my perception and opened my mind toward this course as I think this course is not important and burdensome. However, after attending the mass lecture, I believe that this course is vital and has many advantages as it not only exposes students to community engagement but it also helps students to be better human beings in society and indirectly know the purpose of education.
